Re: [RC] Why do Endurance? (was Why I like horses) - Don Huston

Okay, here is my opinion.

1. I ride Endurance for the trail. The more technical, water, steep climbs, rugged beauty, fewer roads, slower pace, the better I like it. The flat, fast, easy trails are very boring. I consider my ride fee is for renting the course for 12 or 24 hours and I like to get my monies worth in time on the trail.

2. Higher or lower AERC fees were not the tipping point for me. I have had to stop not only endurance rides but everything else except basic payments, food, horse board, utilities, etc. A 3 day ride 275 miles from home was costing me $500. A whole year of AERC membership only costs as much as 1 horse boot or a glue gun and 1 tube of Vettec glue or shoeing 2 hooves.

So - I have a two-fold question:

1. why do you do endurance riding?

and

2. at what point would it become too expense for you to do organized (e.g. AERC) endurance riding instead of just getting out and riding long distances for the fun of it?
(I ask this because AERC is considering a $10 membership dues increase, and $2 rider fee (per ride) increase, as well as $2 drug testing fees increase.)
