I think a person needs a few good pulls before they can start progressing from Newbie status. I did lots of miles before I had any real pulls, or issues to deal with, and -then- I really started learning, and respecting the sport. It's the problem solving that really teaches. Of course many things I've had to learn again, over and over... but there are a few things that stick :)
