[RC] Risk Takers (was: Mongol Derby, etc.) - k s swigart

It is geared toward attracting people with type A
?personalities who are ALL ABOUT being willing to
?accept RISKS & TAKING CHANCES! These participants are
?admittedly RISK TAKERS and definitely will be doing
?so with their own lives, safety and health and more
?than likely, ALSO will be taking chances and risks
?with their horses.
?
I realize that this may fly in the face of the logic of most people, but risk
takers (not the same thing as a type A personality, btw, so I won't address
type A personalities) are some of the most careful people on the planet.
?
You want to find a group of people who make contingency plans, on top of their
back up plans, on top of their safety plans, risk takers win, hands down.? Just
go to a movie set and take a look at the stunt management.? When the risks are
high, being prepared for everything that might possibly go wrong is paramount.
?
Just go to a fire line and watch real firemen, fight fires; and while you will
find a whole bunch of pyromaniacs on a fire crew, you won't find a single one
who is cavalier about fire.? They KNOW that every time they get close to fire,
they risk getting burned.? So while they are willing to get close to fire, they
are damned careful not to let it get behind them.
?
People who routinely take risks are really good at being very careful not to
take any risks on top of those risks.
?
And being a "risk taker" myself, I can guarantee you, that if all the
participants who are signed up for this event are also died in the wool risk
takers, that not a one of them is going to ride their horses into the ground
out in the middle of the Steppes of Mongolia.? Risk takers don't do stupid shit
like that; they are WAAAAAY too careful.? There are enough risks inherent in
just being there that you don't take the unnecessary risk of cavalierly
disregarding the functionality of your only mode of transportation.

?
p.s.? There ARE horsemen besides endurance riders who know how to tell if a
horse is tying up or colicking.
