RE: [RC] Yucca in feed - Terry Banister

That is a very good question. However, my horse does not even want his "normal" food at basecamp. He turns his nose up at his normal Orchard-grass hay and shredded beet pulp, and pouts and won't eat it. So I feed him alfalfa at base camp, which he considers a treat, and it also provides the extra calcium, and I give him Purina Complete Advantage with his usual Platinum Performance in a wet mash, plus carrots and apples. He only gets this diet at competitions, but his body is used to this, and he expects it. To me, it's more important that he eats well the night before the ride.

A question for you vets out there - would it not be better for the horse to simply choose another feed than to CHANGE feeds just before an event? I get a little squiggly over that prospect. I hardly change my own SOCKS right before a ride.

To me, the simple answer has been overlooked: Just discontinue feeding the Triple Crown (or any product that contains undesireable contents) at least 96 hours prior to competition. I believe that is the timeframe for substances to pass through the body and not show up on race day. Likewise, this is the procedure for feeding fats, discontinue feeding rice bran and other fats about three days prior to competition, not for "drug" reasons, but for metabolic reasons. Then after arriving home from competition, continue with "normal" diet.
