[RC] Yucca - Bruce Weary DC

" I was hoping the AERC drug policy would have been updated based on science rather than hearsay."

Truman--
If you truly wish to influence public opinion in a positive direction, you simply must adopt new policies and procedures in how you put your opinions forth. Your habits of cheap logic and misdirection designed to help you seem knowledgeable while impugning the efforts of the good and talented people who worked very hard on the new drug rule (which, itself is a work in progress and a bit like herding cats) or virtually any other AERC driven proect, just doesn't work. If you were to use the same approach in a refereed scientific debate, you would lose, and lose big.
I don't have a particular opinion on MSM, but let's take your conclusion out for a spin. You said: "Major double blind studies on MSM in humans point to no more effective than a placebo. No reason to believe the same is not true in horses." This from Wikipedia: "Chocolate contains alkaloids <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkaloid> such as theobromine <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobromine> and phenethylamine <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenethylamine>, which have physiological effects on the body. It has been linked to serotonin <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin> levels in the brain. Scientists claim that chocolate, eaten in moderation, can lower blood pressure.^[1] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate#cite_note-pantograph-0> Dark chocolate <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_chocolate> has recently been promoted for its health benefits, including a substantial amount of antioxidants that reduce the formation of free radicals,......

Sounds good, right? No reason not to believe that it should be good for dogs, too. Until you read the rest of the sentence: "... though the presence of theobromine renders it toxic to some animals^[2] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate#cite_note-dogs-1> , such as dogs <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog> and cats <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat>." You can kill a dog with enough chocolate. (Of course, you can woo a woman with enough of it, too. :>)
It's not good science to extrapolate the findings of studies on one species and assume that they must be the same for another. In reality, MSM and yucca may be inert or have only very mild influence, but there are an overwhelming number of people using both products and claiming significant results that it may be prudent to restrict them for the time being, until new information steers us further. The last word hasn't been written on MSM, yucca, or any one of a thousand other things. We are, at all times, partially right, and trying to become more partially right. If you can get comfortable with that, it may help you to truly see the bigger picture, rather than offer sweeping condemnation of the limited view you have. Bruce Weary
