What they were using to "drug" the ponies were vit/mins.  Probably not unlike a 
lot of us do (giving WAY more selenium than normal horses would take).  The 
problem came when a compounding pharmacy here tried to duplicate the formula 
that they had been purchasing in their home country.  They made a HUGE error in 
the compounding formula and gave many, many times the amount of selenium that 
is safe.

I suppose I'm going to sound uncaring but I find this tribute to be 
melodramatic 
and saccharine.  It's not like all these people had no clue that the horses 
were 
being pumped up (and it's a pretty good bet a lot of them are doing it too). 
Had the "tribute" included some mention of the dangers of drugging polo ponies, 
it might have been more believable.  As it stands, I see it as just 
self-serving, or as the Indians say, "He speaks with forked tongue."
