I think it's bit more complicated than that, but that is at least one lever, and it is true in any area of competition where placement is a factor of judging.  Note, however, the judges have to be protected as well.  No judge is going to change the way they place horses if that results in show management not inviting them to judge.

I have owned, showed and ridden TWH for a long time, even before Endurance.  When the judges quit placing the "big lick" horses, the trainers will stop soring.  Simple as that and I don't see it happening.  They just find other sneakier ways to do it...............mb (who showed only pleasure TWH)
