[RC] Different trailer issue - backing out - Sharon Hahn

To train a horse to back out of a step down trailer, practice backing in and out of the barn door, stall door, etc.  This really helps with the dark to sunny transition and gets your horse to trust you.  It's amazing horses that won't back into stalls they happily wander in and out of all day long.

Then you just have to load when you aren't busy and ask the horse to unload.  It will work better if you load a little bit at a time (one foot in, back out/both fronts in, back out/ 3 feet in, back out).   It might take a long time (like 3-4 hours), but very few horses will choose to spend their life in the trailer instead of eventually backing out.  Be sure to reward any small movement, like rocking back and *thinking* of taking a step, with pressure release and maybe treats (don't offer the treats so that the horse has to come forward to reach it, either!).  Make sure the footing is good near the back door so they won't slip when coming out.
