[RC] Always wants to be in front - k s swigart

I have been riding this horse for 10 years.
?We don't have many groups to ride with, but
?she always wants to be in the front.

In my experience, the best way to teach horses such as these (which, oddly
enough, I find more commonly than presumably Bruce Weary does who says he has
more horses that like to follow) that they don't always have to/get to be in
front is to teach them "wait, and you will get your turn."
?
The lesson works best if you have about 3-4 people/horses to do the schooling
session together, and each horse gets a turn at being in front...for not very
long.?
?
You can do it by playing leap frog with the horses in a line along the trail
where the person in the back pulls off to the side, rides faster past all the
other horses until it is front, is rated back to the same speed, and is put to
the original side in front of the line of horse and then the exercise is
repeated with the new horse at the back being taken past the line and slowed
down when it is in front....
?
The other way you can do it (which works best with three) is again to have a
trail that is wide enough for you to ride two abreast, have two horses ride in
front next to each other and the third horse behind with all the horses going
at the same speed, do this very briefly and then have one of the horses in
front drop back and put the horse that was in back in front.? Each horse gets a
turn at being behind, and each gets a turn at being in front.? These turns,
especially to start with, need to be very short with slowly lengthening the
time of each turn.? So, to start with the horse doesn't have to wait very long
before it gets its turn, after the horse learns that it WILL get a turn,
usually they figure out that it is less effort to wait their turn than to fight
about it.
