[RC] vaccinations - k s swigartChrystal said: So what would someone give their horse outside of vaccines for ?things that kill because they are going to endurance rides?????? If you ride FEI then you are REQUIRED to give the vaccine for influenza, which rarely kills. Some people might think it appropriate to vaccinate for strangles, even though it rarely ever kills, it is extremely contagious.? And some people might think it appropriate to vaccinate for rhino, which is also rarely ever fatal but also quite contagious. Personally, I don't vaccinate for any of these things despite the fact that I take my horse to endurance rides.? I am willing to take my chances that my horse will get them...and get over them. Since WNV is not contagious (from horse to horse), the choice to vaccinate for that should be independent of whether the horse goes to endurance rides or not.? EEE is something that humans as well as horses can get from a horse (with a biting insect as a vector), and rabies is something humans can get directly from a horse (or any other mammal that has it), so if you live in a place where your horse can get rabies (like from the wild-life population) or EEE, then vaccination would be prudent for them as well, whether you go to endurance rides or not. kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
