Re: [RC] Rain sheet advice 600 or 1600D? - Elizabeth Walker

I'm basing this on a sheet that I ordered a while back. I didn't read the item description closely enough, and didn't get the "supreme" version that I was used to. The one I normally ordered was 1200, the one I got (and sent back) was 600.

Basically, the 600 was a much thinner material than the 1200, and I don't think it was as tight a weave.

So: it kind of depends on what you want it for.
-- the 600 would be a lot more likely to get torn, but it would be lighter. I'm not sure if it would hold the waterproofing as long as the 1600. It might be less likely to retain heat under the sheet.

-- the 1600 would stand up to more abuse, but would be a heavier material. On the one hand, it would be less prone to flap around, and might do better in the waterproofing department, but on the other, it might retain more heat.

I would look for "breathable" as well. Otherwise, your horse is just going to sweat up under the sheet, and would probably be wetter (and hotter) than without it. I made that mistake on a group ride: put on a sheet because it was starting to rain at the end of the ride, but it was probably in the low 70's / high 60's, and it was a bit humid. My poor horse got wetter from sweating under the sheet than the horses standing in the (short, light) rain without protection.

I'm looking at rain sheets. One is 600 denier, the other is 1600 denier, both are guaranteed waterproof, same brand, same price. So...what's the difference? I would assume 1600 is better normally...but if they're both 100% waterproof...is one just thicker? If you have a 600 and like it would you please let me know? I hate being at a warm but rainy ride and having nothing but a heavy winter blanket I could put on them.
