Re: [RC] calculating mileage - Barbara McCrary

My husband used to measure our trails with a map wheel and he added 10% straight across the board. Comparing the measurement to that of a truck odometer, the overall mileage came out so close as to be acceptable, as far as we were concerned. You were just far more particular and perhaps more accurate that we, but it worked fine for us. No one ever complained our ride was too long, just tough!

I have this handy little mechanical wheel meter that I bought from a Soviet Army surplus catalogue for $15. I run the thing over a loop on topographic map three times, take the average, and multiply by a factor depending on the relief on the map. Lots of relief gets a 15% increase, rolling hills, 10%, and flat, 5%. I can calculate these mileages off my kitchen table while the weather is bad. I’ve checked some of these loops with an odometer on site and my error is about 0.1 mile per 10 miles or 1%. Funny thing was when I got the ride feedback riders were complaining that the loops seemed WAY too long for the mileage given. I just had to laugh at that one.
