Re: [RC] Teff Hay - Elizabeth Walker

I get the same kind of behavior from my one-horse study on bermuda. Some lots he likes, some he doesn't. I have it on good authority that he is one of the more picky eaters at the place where I board.

I have a Trail-Rite mesh feed bag set up for extra hay that I keep filled with bermuda that I buy from a different supplier than the ranch has. This lets him have hay 24/7. In the evenings I add some orchard to it. (I used to try mixing it, but he would throw the hay around so he could pick out the orchard, so now I just put the orchard on top.)

Right now, he has an interesting eating pattern: he eats his beet pulp mash first, of course, then will eat the ranch Bermuda, then the orchard, then will pick at the extra Bermuda on days when he wants a bit more --- unless I leave the black plastic garbage bag with the orchard open in his pen while I clean mats, etc. Then he will finish his mash, and start eating the orchard out of the black plastic bag. When I take the bag away, he starts on his ranch-supplied Bermuda, ignoring the orchard in the mesh bag (that just came out of that same plastic bag...). Go figure.

This pattern is subject to change when the lots of hay change. If the ranch gets a lot of hay that he doesn't like, he will clean up the hay in the mesh bag, and either ignore the hay in his feeder, or throw it around and stomp on it.... :)

I have had mixed results with Teff. The first time I used it the horses
really liked it. The second time I got some bales straight from the grower
and I don't know what the grower did with it (grew, cured, stored
incorrectly?) but my horses did not like it at all. I just got some new
Teff and my picky horses doesn't care for it and my not picky horse says
"not my favorite" but eats its. Ranelle is right buy a few bales and see
how it goes because they may seem to like it at first and then not care for
it. Of course if you can mix with a little alfalfa it will probably go
over better.
