[RC] Quebec Standardbreds - aarenex

Just got this link from a friend:

With the closure of racetracks in Quebec and the cancellation of the annual
sale, many Quebec Standardbred trotters and pacers are headed for the auction,
hopefully to be sold as riding horses, but mostly to be sold to the killer
buyers.

Standardbreds off the track require some retraining (many have never carried a
rider because they pull a sulky in races) but they are generally nowhere near
as "hot" as off-track Thoroughbreds. The horses being sold off right now are
fit, healthy, sound horses in extremely good condition, not broken-down speed
junkies.

Historically, STBs do extremely well in endurance themselves, and many top
endurance horses are half arab, with the unmentioned half being a
standardbred. Look up Pandora's Pixy and Catch Me If You Can for examples of
this.

The breed is known for having a calm temperment, extremely hard feet, and a
"good citizen" attitude. They can be as fast and as enduring as arabs, and
some can be taught to gait as well as walk-trot-canter.

I know that most of us have a full barn already, but if you need a horse and
can get to the Quebec sales, you can probably pick up a good one for pennies.

Happy New Year, everyone,
