[RC] Horses and weight gain - Ranelle Rubin

Oh Susan, again the voice of reason!!

My horses (both Arabs, one 4 and one 8) get 4 flakes a day each..two of Teff which is a forage hay and one each of a 3-way grain hay and an alfalfa-orchard grass mix. They are both in excellent flesh despite the fact they live outside with shelter from the rain, but no cushy barn...

They do get their supplements:

Maintenance dose of 1 oz. of regular Dynamite
1c. of Pelleted Grain Ration (from Dynamite)
1c. Beet pulp-then soaked
1/2 oz of Free N Easy (joint supplement from Dynamite)

The concentrate is a very small amount total-less than most folks feed of grain alone.

The soybean product Susan is talking about is called H.E.S. (high energy supplement) and is also an ingredient in the PGR.

Personally, if I had a horse that was hard to keep weight on, I would feed the diet above and possibly add more PGR..I feed more on days they get ridden, about 2c. and then up to 6-8 c. on a ride day. You could also stick with the grain product you are using and use the H.E.S. instead.

The other Dynamite product to consider for rides is called Pre-Race Pack..awesome stuff! You start it 2-3 days prior to the ride and discontinue after ride day. It gives the horse a back-up supply of the nutrients we KNOW they are depleting on a ride. Nice thing, the experts at Dynamite have done the research, so I know I can add any product as needed, and as directed without worrying about overdoing it and causing an imbalance.

All the product information is on the website:

Feel free to use my name to get in, and let me know if you have any questions.
