Laws vary greatly.  In some cases timed events (races) are prohibited, but recreational or CTR events allowed.  The completion by time criteria determines if something is considered a race and may either be prohibited by rules governing the land or by the insurance of the land owner.  On many sites we can have CTR's, CMO's, recreational rides, but not endurance because its considered a race.

I guess I'm unclear on WHY a land manager would even care what type of
riding is done, competition or otherwise.  What's the difference?
