Re: [RC] PLEASE discuss Potassium article. - rides2far@xxxxxxxx

But then I started trying a few rides without using electrolytes on my
endurance horses and have done the last probably twelve thousand miles that
way with success.
I do put loose salt and sometimes an elyte powder into their feeds which
they readily eat >>>and that seems to work.

I have just finished my first season on my new horse "Seven" and one of his
quirks is he just says "NO!" to anyone approaching him with a syringe. I
mean...from 10 yards away even. He was handled very little before I got him as
a 7 year old and he's absolutely wonderful about most things...However, he has
a couple of quirks which are probably the result of his not so great breeder
attempting to manhandle him for worming & trimming.

Since it's really important to me that he learn not to fight when a vet tries
to check his mucous membranes, I have put any thoughts of dosing with
electrolytes on the back burner for now...so he did his first 4 50's with no
syringed electrolytes, only what he got in feed, which I added in fairly small
quantities (maybe 1/2 dose per check).

He is a *great* eater and I'm not in any hurry. He did do one hot ride but the
other three had moderate temperatures. His recoveries were great and CRI's were
48/48 and 44/48 so I am not concerned at this speed; but am not ruling out
possibly needing to dose if we get to go farther or faster.

I would have preferred to see this research at some of our hotter rides...like
Big South Fork in the fall with heat, humidity, and lots of climbs. Also, I
doubt very seriously they had any idea what the two control groups were
*eating* during their rides and I would think that could have an impact. It
seemed to me that they got very little proof of their hypothesis. They pretty
much decided they'd been right, the results just didn't cooperate. I just
wasn't sure I was reading their study correctly.
