[RC] The Price of Hay in California - kathy swigart

Sharon said:

Move to Maine... specifically near Belfast.
?I'm getting 40# bales of excellent timothy/brome
?for $2.50 out of the barn and $2.25 out of the
?field. Of course, if you want alfalfa around
?here, good luck... you'll have to ship it in.
?
Well, one of the big differences between the price per bale of hay in
California and the price per bale in other places is that a "regular" bale of
hay in California is a 3 string bale not a two string bale and weighs between
100 and 130 pounds.
?
The other big difference is that few Californians buy their hay "out of the
barn" or "out of the field" but if you do you can get it for ALOT less than
from the feed store or delivered and stacked in your barn.
?
Go out to the Imperial Valley and buy your hay out of the field there and it
won't cost you $15 to $20 a bale...at least it won't until you have done all
the work and paid for all the gas to get it from there to your horse.
?
Me?? I am willing to pay to have my hay delivered and not have to go get it
from the field myself; especially since those 120# bales are a PITA to shift.
