Re: [RC] feed prices...the rest of the story :) - Sharon Levasseur

Move to Maine... specifically near Belfast. I'm getting 40# bales of excellent timothy/brome for $2.50 out of the barn and $2.25 out of the field. Of course, if you want alfalfa around here, good luck... you'll have to ship it in.

Right now our gas prices are higher than the national average, though.

Wow!! I need to move to Colorado!! Grass/alfalfa is about 3 times that
amount here (central coast, Calif).
So, on that note, what would cause such a major flux in price from one
area to the next? Aren't seed costs, ag production, etc. pretty much
the same across the country? The gas prices are way down, so that's not
it.
Our hay here is roughly between $15 & $25 a bale. (unless it's straw)

That is so true, and especially in agriculture. We've been blessed in this country with abundance in good land, resulting in inexpensive food, inexpensive agricultural products overall. That will not always be, with increased pressure on the available, arable land, with less irrigation water in the west, and more variable weather patterns. And the ever-present energy demands.

It is amazing to me that hay, good grass hay, and grass/alfalfa hay, is
still available to me at $4.50 and $5.00 a bale. That is such a great
deal, all things considered, and I'm thankful.
