[RC] SVO (was: warnings etc.) - k s swigart

Truman said:

The warning was not ambiguous. It's very
difficult to have a sentence that short with
an adjective, subject and verb be ambiguous
- especially if the subject and verb are very
specific.

Actually, since "bite" is a transitive verb (one that allows an object
and requires an object in order to be fully understood), the fact that
the sentence did NOT include an object (that is what the "O" in SVO of
the subject line stands for), it was very ambiguous.

Unless you include an object for the verb "to bite," the statement "my
horse bites" is virtually meaningless. ALL horses bite; at least all
horses with teeth do, which is virtually all horses. They don't all bite
the same things, but they all bite.

You want people to know that your horse bites people, you need to tell
them that your horse bites people; otherwise, they may make assumptions
about the object of the verb to bite...and be wrong.

Any sentence with a transitive verb requires a subject, a verb, and an
object in order not to be ambiguous. And this is grade school grammar,
so even people who claim never to have made it past fourth grade should
know that.
