Most people pronounce it with a K sound and the emphasis on the second syllable....ka TAR.  Some pronounce it with the emphasis on the first syllable...KA tar (depending on if they are British, South African, etc.).  I am told that in Arabic the Q is actually more of a guttural phoneme (sound) and is something in between "cutter" and "gutter."  Everyone knows what you mean here regardless of how you pronounce it, and I find myself saying it all of the above ways, depending on who I am with and what we are talking about.  Don't ask me why.  :)

I loved your story.  The trot out would be wonderful.  The vet check at the National Championship was a mess....straight down a hill!
