We've seen the change in "ear pitch" from the second the behind horse comes up even with the front horse.  When past the front horse, the behind horse now becomes responsible for the "herd" and the front horse, now behind, can relax because he is no longer responsible.  I've watched this over and over for decades.  Interesting....
