[RC] Hard Headed Horses - Trailering - Nikki McCormack

No matter what you do, I strongly recommend finding a way to teach your horse to trailer reliably, preferably without the lure of food if possible.  If you are in a position when you need to move your horse in a hurry (evacuation due to a fire, injury that requires immediate care at the clinic, etc), there is no substitute for having them completely convinced that getting in quickly and reliably (and preferably being sent in) is the only way to go.  It can even be a comfort to the horse to be asked to do something routine (getting into the trailer) in high stress moments.  In those situations, you don't want to be messing around getting food together or fighting with the horse.  Additionally, having them trained to go in ahead of you reduces the risk of being injured if they do panic in a high stress situation and can also translate to sending them into a stall ahead of you to stay out of the crush zone there as well.

My two cents...
