Re: [RC] Rides you have never been to (was: Safe???) - Truman Prevatt

I think it is a regional thing. I have gone to many SE rides without calling in advance or worrying about how it will be run. The SE rides are all run about the same - very well. They all have treatment vets available. The ride fliers for SE rides are pretty complete in telling you what to expect. So I don't feel any necessity in worrying about it. When I went to Shore to Shore, I did checking with people that had done it so I knew what to check. But a point to point has its own set of things one needs to consider.

If I'm going out West and am looking at different routes based on rides, I sure want to know and if the information is not published will make sure I get the info before I make any decisions.

I am curious. Do people really just show up at a ride that they have not taken the trouble to find out more about than the date of the ride and directions to camp?

-- Estimated difficulty of the ride. Some descriptions
have this, some don't.
-- Number of vet checks
-- Treatment vet available or treatment alternatives
-- Vet check setup; i.e., water, hay, water for riders,
etc. I think this is where most of the variation would
be. -- Availability of water on the trail

All of this information can be gotten from the ride manager. And the name and contact information for the ride manager can be gotten from the AERC.

Ride managers, if they are smart and don't want to have to provide this
to each potential rider who inquires individually, will publish this
information so riders don't have to inquire individually.

Personally, I would never just show up at a ride without having first
determined what the ride was going to be like or prepared to take care
of everything myself.
