Re: [RC] "Perfect" horse for heavyweight rider? - Carrie Kitley-Jackson

I hope people didn't misunderstand me when earlier in this post, I mentioned getting a Mule.  I wasn't not joking or being facetious, I was serious.  I LOVE Arabs and my endurance horse is one, but I honestly wouldn't mind having a Mule for endurance someday.  Many more people are going that route because they're pretty much bomb-proof, sure footed, have lastability and are very good natured.  I had some friends that had an Arab/Draft cross Mule named "Bonus" that they used for packing.  He would outlast all the horses on their trips and when the horses would all freak out spooking over something, there Bonus would be, looking at them as if they all lost their gourds!
If I were looking for a bigger, sturdier mount, I would definitely consider a Mule.  But I would also keep my Arab forever.  :)

My old fellow was 1/2 Polish - a Witez II grandson, and while he could
be laid back in the corral, I would still call him "hot", especially

in a race situation. I still remember him trying to race the crew
vehicles going down the road past us, and me saying "Slow down,
dammit!". He was 2 weeks away from his 25th birthday ...

My current horse is pure Polish, and I would judge him as generally
hotter than Shadow was. He can be very calm - deer and turkeys
popping out of the bushes don't bother him at all, but a race? A group
ride? My biggest issue with him right now is 'race brain'.

So - based on my 2-horse study, I would say that you can get hot
horses in the Polish lines as much as the others. My advice would be
to judge the individual horse, and perhaps investigate the parents,
and any close relatives to get an idea of temperament.
