Re: [RC] Joint formulas . . - Elizabeth Walker

I don't have any experience with Cosequin, but I do with Adequan. My old horse, Shadow, was on it for about the last 5 years of his life.

It isn't a cure-all -- in his case, proper shoeing was also a must. Shadow needed wedge pads to raise his heels. The farrier said that he got uncomfortable when he had to stand without the pads while being reshod, so it was definitely a big part of the equation.

However -- I could always tell if my vet was late with the injection. He would drop by on a schedule, and give Shadow the Adequan injection, then send me the bill. Every once in a while, he would get busy and would be late. Shadow would going very slightly off...I would call the vet, and sure enough - he had missed the scheduled injection.

I started out with the loading dose, and a maintenance dose of one shot a month. As the arthritis progressed, the once-a-month routine wasn't doing it. At about week 3, he would start going slightly off again. So - we increased the frequency to twice a month, and that was doing the job quite well. We were doing at least 25 miles a week riding, and he completed an LD on that dosage.

I did have to repeat the loading dose about once a year. Again, he would start going slightly off, even though he had gotten his injection on time. We would repeat the loading dose, and he was then good to go back to the maintenance dose.

Hope that helps.

I hope you guys aren't getting totally bored with my "arthritis" questions. After spending $732.00 for my vet to do a lameness exam, sedate my horse and do Hylartin V injections, I'm seeking other alternatives in an effort to thwart the breeding of moths in my wallet.
I've gotten some great advice so far, one was Adequan and the other running a close 2nd was Cosequin. People have said they both work really well for joint issues.
So, for those of you who have used either of these, would it be a wise choice to try one of these after these injections wear off? If so, which one?
I don't want to continue with these joint injections unless I absolutely HAVE to and it would be way down the road, especially since the vet reports that she has the "beginnings" of arthritis.
Anyone ever used Med-Vet ForaFlex? Just curious.
