You  may have a prescriptive easement over the road. The other thing is
that just because it is a private road I don't know if that means that they
can just stop you from using the road particularly if it leads to another
road.  I am not an attorney and laws obviously vary.  We had a similar
issue with a ditch road and we were able to keep it open as the road had
been used for decades by people.  As for the private road issue that isn't
the same but I would look into it.
