what say you?

Ear hair (which is what protects a horse's middle and inner ear from bugs) is just a susceptible to being damaged as any other hair. If you keep forcing it down by inserting plugs of whatever nature, you will eventually destroy its resiliency and it will stay down so that when you take off the plugs, the ear will have no protection.

So my short answer is don't use ear plugs at all.
