[RC] barefoot/okay something just jumped out at me! - k s swigart

Question: how many of your farriers out there still ask
you to walk your horse out for evaluation both pre and
post shoe/trim?

Mine will only ask me to do that if, after I explain to them how the
horse has been moving for the last x weeks that I have been riding it
and what, if anything I would like to have done differently, they don't
fully understand what I am asking or why and so want to see it for
themselves. But I know far more about how my horse moves under saddle
at all gaits during the time that the farrier was gone than could ever
be determined by watching the horse walk out and back in hand, so
usually they are willing to just take my word for it.

Personally, however, I consider it more relevant to look at the way the
shoes are wearing after taking them off, before putting new ones back
on. The only way I can compare, side by side, how left and right shoes
are wearing, is when they are off the horse.

But then, I also pretty much never have a shoer shoe my horse when I am
not there.
