Although I would not personally compete my horse barefoot, I did a 100 mile ride with Dana Maas on her horse Jerico, who was barefoot.  The footing was pretty decent, mostly field roads and dirt paths, but there was a good chunk of gravel road (from what I can remember....it was dark...), and it didn't slow him down at all.  He is a mixed breed horse they think has some mustang in him.  So I would say it depends totally on your horse.
