[RC] Mg Sulphate and Rule 13 - Michael Maul

There have been questions posed recently online about Mg Sulphate being a banned substance under Rule 13 while being an ingredient in a commercial electrolyte.

A motion from the Vet Committee at the August mid-year meeting will change the appendix if approved. Here's part of the motion

Proposed Motion To update the appendices of Rule 13 with the following changes:

2) Remove from Appendix A, Prohibited Substances: magnesium sulphate

A note from the Vet Committee Chair Melissa Ribley, DVM does add

"when administered at levels that produce laxative or
sedative effects (a much higher dose than is in commercial
electrolytes) magnesium sulphate will still be prohibited under
Appendix B which prohibits laxatives and sedatives as a class of
substances."
