RE: [RC] Upward Patellar Fixation - Sarah L. Jarvis

I have worked with a few horses that had this problem in varying degrees.
In its least sever it exhibits as a hitch in the gait. This horse tends to
be short strided and heavy on the forehand to avoid locking the stifle.
Specific exercises can really help these horses along with a treatment of
Estradial. I've worked with two other horses that had much more severe
cases where their stifles would actually lock and they would hop along on
three legs. One of these horses had a malformation of the stifle and there
was nothing that could be done. He was put to pasture. The other horse had
surgery and was a very successful equitation horse. If the condition is
very severe exercise won't help and you can actually risk damaging the
ligaments and tendons of the stifle.

Subject: [RC] Upward Pateller Fixation

Anyone have any experience with upward pateller fixation? I have an
almost 5-year old Polish arab gelding who exhibits this by dragging his
hind toes, and sort of "locking up." I've heard exercise is the first
thing to try and I'm ponying him. He's getting started under saddle. A
trainer (200 lbs) got on him on the other day and the poor horse didn't
want to move!
