[RC] Human heel pain and endurance - Patti Stedman

Hey folks.

I have been struggling with heel pain for nearly the last year and have tried to "fix" it myself, fairly certain it was plantar fasciitis.

The pain has changed to stabbing pain in my heel, so finally went to the orthopedic doc yesterday, and came home with a myriad of "fixes" (apparently the fascia inflammation is impingeing on the nerve in my heel) including a cast to wear at night while I sleep.  Stretches, anti-inflammatories, heel cushion, standard stuff.  There was some talk of a chiro technique involving breaking up the adhesions in the fascia, and shockwave, but we're starting with the simple stuff at this point.

The doc seems to think that riding is a bad idea with this condition <insert eye roll here> and I figure that I am not the only one continuing to ride with this condiiton, so am wondering how other riders are managing it.

My favorite solution from the doc, since I was apparently not going to give up riding, was to "ride for shorter periods of time."  I thought for sure my husband would agree with this suggestion since he'd like to go to bed earlier when he crews for me on 100s.  I tried to explain that even if I picked up the pace a fair bit that I'd still be out there for 10+ hours.  She was generally unimpressed.

If you've got ideas or suggestions, I'm all ears.  I miss long walks with my dogs and doing real hikes, and the bike at the gym is getting really old!

Thanks in advance and feel free to email me privately at procompsvc@xxxxxxxxxxxxx to avoid cluttering the list.
