Re: [RC] Trailering, then riding - Barbara McCrary

I believe there is a limit to starting late, whether it's an AERC rule or individual ride rule.  AERC rules state the riders must be on site at the starting time.  On our ride, I allow about 15 mins. later than the published start time.  This allows a more relaxed start, although on a 100-miler, the hot shoes don't usually go off like they were fired out of a cannon, anyway.  Most of our riders start at a nice modest trot, some even at a walk for a short bit. We require all riders to give their number at the starting line, whether before the actual start or as they cross the starting line.  This way, we have a completely updated list of starters so we can follow their progress and make certain no one is lost.
