Ends of pine tree branches with white tips, just eye high so you'd 

see them:) I do recall being on my hands in the rocks bending to 

taste the white spot to see if it was a trail marking -- it was not:(“

 

Heehee, I remember white paint on white aspen trees, yellow paint on yellow (fallen) aspen leaves, black paint on black rocks and pink paint on pink flowers.  The next marker was within site of the last one – if you could see it!  We only got lost once, where some flowers had lost their petals.  Finally we just let one horse that thought she knew where she was going determine the path for us – and she was right!
