Re: [RC] First 50 - Katrina Mosshammer

LOL...This brings back memories :-)

My old gelding, Whatta, had a trot that was like a jack hammer and I always did my best to avoid that gait whenever possible, but he did have a really nice "rocking horse" lope. I don't clearly remember my first 50 on him (I was just a kid and it all sort-of blends together) but it was probably something like 58% lope, 2% trot, 40% walk. In fact with that particular horse I don't think that I ever did more the about 5% trotting no matter if I was doing a 25, 50 or 100.

Now my mare, Perle, has a wonderful long trot and doesn't really like to lope. My first 50 on her was also her first 50 ever and the first ride we did together, but more importantly it was the first 50 I had done in 11 years and I was not in as good of shape as she was. My legs were mush at the halfway point and she was running circles around on the end of her lead. That ride we probably did 10% lope, 50% trot, 40% walk, because of me not her. My legs hurt so much I couldn't post more than a dozen strides or so at a time on the last loop, but we turtled with 15 min. to spare and she was running circles around me at the final check as well. ;-)

But that's just my horses, every horse is different. I would just figure out which gait works best for you and your horse and take into consideration the terrain and learn what it feels like when they need to switch gears to give themselves a break.

Subject: [RC] First 50

Just curious. If any of you can remember long long ago doing your first 50 on a horse thats done a 25 or 30 miler roughly what percentage of the time is spent walking/trotting and cantering? I think a while back someone mentioned the mile per hour average only has to be around 5 and of course it would depend on terrain and heat but what would a rough gauge be? 80% trot?

Thanks,
Kathy
