Re: [RC] [RC] Rider weight vs horse size - Maryben Stover

Depends on the horse.  My endurance horses are 14.1. One is a Spotted Saddle Horse (horrors a non Arab) and did his first 16 rides in a row.  One is an Arab mare who is almost pure CMK so you can figure out how she is built.  The third is a mustang (course his cannons measure 9").  I have not ridden the mustang yet because I had to take time out for a new steel hip.  However, I am a HW without tack and my horses do just fine.  Course they go alot fasther when juniors ride them.  But.................the are all built like tanks.....................mb

If your mare even begins to represent "sturdy", the answer to your question is NO.  I have ridden a couple of 14.2 horses that were sturdy and well muscled, as opposed to spidery or skinny, and each one was one of the best horses I ever rode.  My husband placed a very close second on one of them, and he ride HVYWT.  The other one took me through Tevis twice.  Your mare is definitely not too small for your riding weight, because at 900#, she has to be sturdy at the height.

Ok, here's a new topic I'd like to gather opinions on . . .
My mare is 14.2 hh and weighs about 880 to 900 lbs or so.  Personal body weight plus gear and pack weight is probably about 185 total.  Even if my mare is conditioned properly, do you think this is too much weight for her to do a 50?  Or am I just a softy and worrying too much about her carrying said weight?  Lol
Just curious.
