My father grew up on a farm in East Texas, where his father plowed the field with a mule and hand-held plow (what back breaking work!), and they went to "town" in a wagon pulled by that same mule.  Everyone was poor, but they didn't know the country was in a depression.  They had milk cows, hogs, truck gardens, chickens, and everyone traded goods and labor.  My father remembers milking his mother's dairy cows (by hand of course) before going to school, his mother sold butter, cream, and milk.
 
You know, that wasn't that long ago, in the history of the world.  One generation.  I always wished we could live like that, but ... they also had no air conditioning, no TV, no telephone, no vaccines for polio, ...  and no internet!  <G>
