[RC] LD, 50, 100 - k s swigart

I can't remember the exact terminology, I'm sure
someone else will jump in here, but a horse's metabolic
system goes into a different mode to complete a 50+
mile ride, thus it's still "endurance riding", however, the
horse can complete a 25-30 without going into that
mode.at least that's the way it was explained to me.

The AERC records do not support this assumption. In fact, the AERC
records support the idea that LD & 50 mile rides fall into the same
category, while one day 100s are a different animal all together.

The completion rates of LD rides up through about 75 miles are about the
same, somewhere around 90%.

The completion rates of rides longer than that fall off, and by the time
you get to the one day 100, it has fallen off pretty dramatically...down
to about 60%.

This may have to do with the stress on the rider rather than on the
horse; there isn't much difference between riding half a day and riding
all day, but riding all day and ALL night takes a human toll that
probably contributes to the decline in completion of the one day 100.
Although, I suspect that it is a combination of both. There are
multitudes of things that you can "get away with" at a 50 mile ride that
were you to try them at a 100 it would come back to bite you.

But make no mistake, with respect to difficulty of effort, it makes much
more sense to lump together completion of LD rides and 50s and consider
100s to be different, than it does to lump together completion of 50s &
up and consider LDs to be a different things. At least, that is what
the AERC's completion rates say.
