Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] Heart Murmur Info Please - Kathy Mayeda

I was told that my endurance horse had a heart murmer by the local vet.  He suggested that I take him to the heart specialist.  This is after we had about 350 miles of competition under our belt and none of the ride vets ever mentioned that to me.  I told this to the barn manager who's a well known endurance rider.  She told me that she had a horse that had a heart murmer that competed very well.  So I just kinda forgot about it.  We got some more miles under our belt without any further comments from any other vet at an endurance ride or otherwise.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't get it checked out.  I'm just saying this is my experience. I also just got back from the barn checking on my horse because someone found him lying down yesterday and thought he was colicing.  He was fine.  It's better to know than not know and worry I think.

There are a number of different types of murmurs and different causes.  Without knowing the kind of murmur your mare has, it's not possible to predict her competitive future.  You should know more after getting a workup done on her by the equine cardiologist.  My retired endurance horse developed a murmur late in his career and it didn't affect him at all.  I can't remember what kind it was...it was a number of years ago.

I was just told this morning that my 6 year old mare
Lucy has a heart murmur. It was defined as 1-2

behaving as a physiological murmur rather than a
pathological one (?). She will go to Rochester Equine
Clinic in NH to see the cardiac specialist there in
the near future for testing to help define it more, so
I can know if she can continue training with CTR in

I am very anxious. I hope some of you have some
stories of horses doing fine with Murmurs!
