Re: [RC] Foot pain - Barbara McCrary

I discovered the stiff sole advantage when I compared riding in Ariat Performers (stiff sole) and Ariat Terrains (soft sole.) The one disadvantage of the Performer, for me, is the tapered toe. This puts pressure on the little toe, but as long as I stay in the saddle, I'm OK. I just don't walk well in them anymore.

I have dabbled in cycling and you are on the right track here. To alleviate foot pain you don't want a flexible soft shoe because this allows for strain and pressure points. Cyclists use a VERY stiff shoe.....hard to walk in even. This helps distribute the pressure across the whole foot. This alleviates burning and numbness that occurs when only a few small areas are absorbing the force.
