Captain Steve was 17 hands - he could have just been lucky. I think the issue is age. The Story of John Henry is interesting. He was having trouble on the dirt in his 2 and 3 year old year. They started running him on turf. When the brought his back to dirt - he kicked butt on both dirt and turf. He won Horse of the Year at age 5 and again age 9. Some how that ornery horse bought himself the time to mature.

Two is just too young for that intense of an activity.
