The filly "Eight Bells" finished the race intact, one ankle broke 10 lengths down the track and the other
broke when she went down and tried to get up. This was a 17 hand filly, which is a big girl to be racing
mile and 1/4th at such a young age.
Captain Steve was 17 hands - he could have just been lucky. I think the issue is age. The Story of John Henry is interesting. He was having trouble on the dirt in his 2 and 3 year old year. They started running him on turf. When the brought his back to dirt - he kicked butt on both dirt and turf. He won Horse of the Year at age 5 and again age 9. Some how that ornery horse bought himself the time to mature.

Two is just too young for that intense of an activity.
