Re: [RC] Endurance rides and rising costs - steelsidedown

As a manager of small local pleasure rides, I am pro pre-registration. It
helps me plan enough food, awards when that is the case, and be sure I have
enough parking and volunteers.

As an endurance rider, I certainly don't mind returning the favor.

Both ways I am able to enjoy a more appropriately planned ride.

However, I do get a little grouchy on the pre-registration fees. A reasonable
non-refundable deposit ($25-$35) is totally acceptable, if the horse or I can't
make it, oh well, I contributed a bit to the ride. But when the
pre-registration is the entire fee ($100-$150) its just not cool.

I small late fee is also reasonable, if its a last minute decision to go, and I
show up unannounced, I expect it, its only fair to management. But, again a
$50+ late fee, no thanks, I'll happily stay home. Who loses? In the end the
ride management takes in less $, and I've saved so can go to someone elses ride
next weekend.

Another grouch point for me.. when a buddy calls and says she can't make it,
can I use her entry.. and ride management refuses the swap. What's the biggie?
Swapping one horse/rider team for another, same distance, same price, same
reservation?

I'm kinda torn about the pre-registering thing. If all that was involved
was a person wanting to show up it would be different. There's this
darned horse that keeps screwing up people's plans so even though they
sincerely *want* to come many have to back out. If I get 100
pre-registrations and only 60 show up I may have bought about $320 worth
of extra T-shirts. :-(

This is the first time I have required pre-registration with a $15
deposit and it has had one very nice bonus. Since this is my first year
running the ride I was going to have to take family funds to get started
with but so far the deposits and those wonderful people who just go ahead
and pay their entire fee have kept enough money in the ride account that
it has stayed out of my bank account. Now, if one of those people who
paid their entry doesn't get to come you can bet I'm going to refund that
money, but I appreciate the loan. The big costs hit on ride day...vets,
porto-lets, AERC, SERA sanction fees, etc. But the deposits are good for
paying for photo-copying, stamps, marking materials....

I'll tell you one thing the high gas prices make me wish....that I could
ride my own ride!
