[RC] Pre-purchase exam - k s swigart

Nancy Strum said:

I purchased an Icelandic mare last year with the
agreement that if she passed the vet, I paid for
the exam and bought the pony. If she didn't, it
was the seller's bill.

While this may SOUND like an attractive option, personally, I would
avoid it...and if I were a vet, I wouldn't get anywhere near it with a
ten foot pole.

Vets need to have clients to whom they owe a professional
responsibility, and that client is the person paying the bill. If it
has not been determined who is paying the bill, the vet doesn't know who
his/her client is.

If who the client is depends on the outcome of the exam, the vet has got
a HUGE conflict of interest.

When/if I do a pre-purchase exam, I want to know that the vet was
working for ME no matter what the outcome of the exam. Especially
since pre-purchase exams don't usually come in the "pass/fail" variety.
The vet just tells the buyer his findings and lets the buyer decide what
to do with that information.
