Just google "bear scent" or "mtn lion scent" and you won't believe how many links you'll get.  Hunters use these scents.  Horses can and do spook from lion or bear scent, I've experienced it myself and had a very panicky horse, even though he never saw anything, he smelled a scent on a tree we passed, and was on the verge of bolting.  He didn't calm down until we were about 100 yards past that tree.  My dogs never reacted, so I know there was nothing still around - just the scent that lingered.  Creepy.
