RE: [RC] Strange Symptoms - Sheila A. Walsh

Lisa,

Your mare's "ouchy" back leg sounds like my mare's problem, until I got a
professional saddle fitting. Her saddle didn't fit her right and it would
show up in her back leg as lameness.

Fwiw,
Sheila

Subject: [RC] Strange Symptoms

I'm posting strange symptoms #1 for a friend of mine who does CTR's. Her
mare is exhibiting strange symptoms (either during or after a ride) of
stretching her neck out, making a choking sound, and curling her lip - then
refusing to move. If in the middle of a ride, the rider dismounts and walks
her back.

Strange symptoms #2 is for me and my mare. What my mare is doing, and only
at the end of a training ride, but not all training rides (maybe 50% of
them), is an ouchy right rear leg. By ouchy I mean lifting her foot off the
ground, raising and lowering it a bit, ow ow ow. If I try to check things
out, she doesn't want me there 'poking around.' I'm thinking cramping, so
walk her around, and she is willing to do this though very ouchy on putting
her foot down. But once she does, and takes several steps, she's much
better. As soon as I stop walking her, whoops, ouchy leg again. If we stop
during a ride for a quick break to have a bite to eat, never a problems with
that. Terrain doesn't seem to matter, nor does the speed of the ride. We
always warm up before a ride and walk back when we are near the end of the
ride. After the trailer ride home, she typically is OK, maybe a bit stiff
on that leg. Next day she's 100% fine.

Any feedback on these strange symptoms would be much appreciated!
