[RC] [RC] Question on odd heart rate on two TWH - Truman Prevatt - Roger Rittenhouse

I thought I should add a comment here.
Truman is right on

The HRM is picking up the motion induced artifact... caused by the trot action -- each time the horse strides on the electrode side, you get a 'beat count' Thus you see the trot pace rate i.e 165 paces per minute which is about an 8 minute mile depending on stride length.

The problem you get with placing the electrode to high on the side -under the girth is the slip movement of the skin vs horses. Plus you get the pucker effect of the chest wall moving in and out, as well as the gap caused by the buckles of the girth.

On slab sided horses place the electrode almost dead center on the girth- mid line. You get almost no slip motion induced artifact in this location. YES the coil lead wire WILL stretch that far - just pull it out to make it less coiled.

Neoprene girths cause the same problem -- put the girth electrode on the center line. Use the Velcro strip or something fuzzy on the girth to hold it in place

Also one has to make sure the upper- under saddle- electrode is not on the shoulder. You get the same problem. Place the top electrode WAY under the saddle - under the stirrup hanger, behind the withers- behind the pocket of the scapula. The shoulder action will cause the same problem, motion artifact with each rotation of the shoulder.

Try BOTH of theses fixes and you should see the HR return to normal.

Of course IF you have the other brand - none of this applies :)
