RE: [RC] Don Horses - Mike Sherrell"Sacred Horses: The Memoirs of a Turkmen Cowboy", Jonathan Maslow, 1994. He went back and rode Akhal-Tekes in the late Soviet era, hung out with the horsemen. A little superficial, but a good bibliography. I've never seen so many photos of Don Horses on one website before. Looks like they included a couple photos of Akhal-Tekes and Kabardians as well. As for history of the Don Horse, all I know is that they were developed by the Don Cossacks. These horses were extremely hardy and were easy keepers: they had to be. These were likely the horses that chased Napoleon's army out of Russia...in the winter. The breed was severely decimated by collectivization, civil war, and famine. If you really want to learn more about Russian breeds, it is always good to read a little about Russian History and Cossack history. I have found that most English books on Cossack history are full of inaccuracies. The really well researched books are rather dry. But since most of us Americans learned very little of Russian history other than the evils of communism and the Bolshevik revolution, it's a fun historical journey take. The Russians and Eastern Europeans bred some fantastic horses. It's nice to see these breeds making a comeback. Lynn "Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people" -W.C.
