Re: [RC] Enlarged Man Sack - Barbara McCrary

My daughter had a gelding that contracted pigeon fever in his sheath. He was miserable and sulky until the abscess broke and drained, and then he started bucking and hopping around with relief.

Is it the remnants of his scrotum (which, if he's a gelding and wasn't a
mature stallion when cut, should be relatively atrophied and virtually
non-existent), or is it his prepuce/sheath that's swollen? If the former,
could be anything, depending on the extent of the pocket and whether there
was anything in there when you cleaned it out (pus, serum, foreign bodies).
If the latter, could be just a dirty sheath that needs some cleaning, and
the puncture is coincidental. Or, a combination of the two.

As for right timing for pigeon fever, I've seen it in dead of winter---and
we don't have "winter" in California, anyway. If you found significant pus,
probably want to follow it up. If it's been fine since and the swelling has
resolved, I'd just keep it clean, flush the pocket with betadine solution
diluted in slightly salty water to the color of weak tea and keep riding.
As always, monitor for a fever or other symptoms, and make sure he's current
on a tetanus booster. If he hasn't had a tetanus or three-way within six
months, not a bad idea to booster with a tetanus toxoid.

I went to get my 24 year old super charged gelding
today to take him on a training ride to find his
scrotum very enlarged. There seemed to be a small
crusty puncture wound. Anyway, my riding partner ,
