I can't speak for really cold temperatures -- I live in San Diego, so "cold" to us is probably near-summer to you folks in really cold areas. We can (and have) gotten 80 degree days in December. Full winter coat + 80 degree temps + hard workout just doesn't work too well.

So, I generally do a trace clip on my horse, and that means he needs some protection when the weather does turn cold. I

A healthy horse with a good coat is sufficiently insulated that the snow will actually build up on them when they are standing still, as not enough body heat gets through the hair to melt the snow.


...(Never mind you couldn't pay ME enough to try to maintain and monitor blankets on 48 head of free-roaming horses that run out on 15 or so acres in the sagebrush all winter!)
